Pilates vs yoga: where should a beginner start?
If you want control and a quieter back, start on the reformer. If you want breath and mobility, start on the mat. Here’s how we place first-timers at Repset.

Most people who walk into Repset ask the same first question: pilates or yoga? Both will make you move better. They just start from different places, and the first hour should match what your body is asking for this week.
Start with pilates if you want control
Our pilates classes are slow on purpose. You work on a reformer or a mat while the trainer checks your ribs, pelvis and breath on every rep. If your back feels noisy after a laptop day, or you want a stronger middle without bouncing around the room, this is usually the better first class.
You will not be asked to flow through a sequence you have not learned. Sofia scales every exercise to the people in the room, which is why the groups stay small.
Start with yoga if you want breath and mobility
Yoga at Repset is unhurried: breath, balance, and enough space to stay in your own body. Kadek teaches without the theatre. If you want mobility, a calmer hour, or a practice you can keep when you travel, start on the mat.
Beginners are welcome. You will not be left copying the strongest person in the corner.
How we place first-timers
- Desk-heavy weeks and a stiff lower back — pilates or healthy back.
- Restless, travel-tired, or wanting breath — yoga.
- Unsure — book either. The first visit is about finding the room that fits.
You can always switch. Memberships are by discipline, but nobody is locked into the wrong room after one class. The point is to start somewhere the trainer can actually see you.
